Understanding the World of the Chronically Ill.

SORENSEN, KAREN M.; AMIS, DOROTHY BRUNER
AJN, American Journal of Nursing: April 1967
Article: PDF Only

An individual forced by a chronic and confining illness to slow down or drop out of the busy pace of the world, experiences major disorientation of his existence and inner life. When hospital life is substituted for a normal way of living, when recovery and release from an institution are uncertain, a patient's despair may be caused less by the illness itself than by what has happened to his normal pattern of life.
