One of the problems facing a professional organization-that of assuring both its democratic nature and effective action-is inherent in the democratic process itself. Therefore, as members now contemplate changes in the structure of ANA, the Journal has turned to a distinguished sociologist and authority on the professions for this analysis of democratic organization: its sometimes conflicting goals and the processes whereby they may be reconciled.
