: The important concept of quality of life has been largely ignored in relation to people with dementia. A major effort is now underway aimed at understanding the personal perspectives of people with dementia and improving their quality of life through the application of personcentered care. An innovative tool known as Dementia Care Mapping has been developed to measure the quality of person-centered care in congregate care settings such as adult day care centers and residential facilities. This article examines the person-centered philosophy as well as the components, implementation, strengths, and limitations of Dementia Care Mapping.
