BucciThis book provides an extensive evaluation of the nutritional research literature and attempts to make application of this information to the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. It begins with a very pertinent review of the basic science/microanatomy of the musculoskeletal tissues and the pathophysiology in injury, and incorporates this to the utilization and function of specific macronutrients, micronutrients, and even non-nutrient dietary components. In a methodical and well-organized text the author comprehensively examines the essentials of each nutrient's role and functions, deficiency symptoms, assessment, intakes, dietary sources, animal studies, and human studies, most of which are referenced extensively.The final chapter, which tries to put together specific recommendations for the treatment of various acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, is essentially an unsupported and unreferenced set of dietary guidelines. In practical terms these protocols may be more cumbersome to institute, as they generally involve taking six or more supplements three to four times daily. This final chapter, containing so many unsubstantiated vitamin and mineral recipes or formulas, makes one wonder what the true value of this text is. Furthermore, the author's descriptions of a number of these musculoskeletal injuries is imprecise and even inaccurate; for example, a greenstick fracture is improperly described as a spiral fracture, and no mention is made of its occurrence primarily in the pediatric population.Certainly, room exists for the scientific testing of nutrient supplements or formulas of micronutrients in the rehabilitation of injured athletes; however, the reader will be disappointed with this text's treatment recommendations for clinical practice, as they are largely a supplement hype and are based on almost no scientific evidence.
