Tough love and no pain-no gain approaches to personal fi tness training can have serious safety risks to the clients and subsequent litigation. This article explores the risks and consequences associated with training strategies adopted by personal fi tness trainers and offers risk management strategies for the health and fi tness professionals to control and minimize these risks.

Betul Sekendiz, M.Sc., Ph.D., is a lecturer in exercise and sport management at Central Queensland University in Australia where her research focuses on risk management in the health and fitness industry.
