Reducing sodium intake is widely accepted as a dietary consideration for improving health of many individuals by reducing the risk for high blood pressure. The unique role of potassium and its potential for reducing risk for high blood pressure is presented.

Thomas P. Martin, Ph.D., FACSM, RCEP, is a professor in the Health, Fitness, and Sport Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH.
