Society has created multiple barriers to children's physical activity which are found in school, community, and home settings. Learn more about the common barriers facing today's youth and effective strategies to help them overcome these barriers.
Russell R. Pate, Ph.D., FACSM, is a professor in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Pate has studied physical activity and fitness in children and adolescents for more than 25 years. His research focuses on measurement of physical activity, interventions to increase physical activity, influences on physical activity behavior, and surveillance of physical activity in the youth.
Ruth P. Saunders, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at the University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on physical activity promotion, organizational and environmental change, and intervention implementation monitoring.
Jennifer R. O'Neill, M.P.H., is a graduate research assistant in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina. She is working on her dissertation that focuses on physical activity in adolescent female dancers.
Marsha Dowda, Dr.P.H., FACSM, is a biostatistician in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on policies and practices influencing children's physical activity, environmental supports of physical activity, and interventions to increase physical activity levels of children and adolescents.
