In 1991, the scientists who isolated the cystic fibrosis gene analyzed the mutations commonly found in affected patients and discovered that activity levels of the various forms of protein correlate with the severity of the disease. This research was conducted at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and funded, in part, by the National Institutes of Health.
